The power source is coming in from the left. Notice the black wire is the only wire that we are controlling through the 2-way switch.
You have an incoming hot wire black going to one screw it does not matter if you use the brass or silver screw on the side of the 2-way switch and a black wire from the other screw on the 2-way switch going to the load light, ceiling fan etc. The white wires are wire nutted together so they can continue the circuit. Just use your mouse pointer on this diagram and follow the current flow from black wire hot wire through the 2-way switch, then to the load and return through the white wire neutral.
This should give you a good basic understanding how the 2-way switch circuit works and will help you in adding or changing a 2-way switch. How a 2-way Switch Circuit Looks.
So the circuit above when explained should give you a good concept on how this basic circuit works. When wiring a 2-way switch, this image on the left will show how the connections should actually look when all connections are made.
Take notice of the ground wire. It's very important that the ground or bare copper wire is connected to the green screw on the switch. All grounds are connected, and the ground is connected at the light when possible. If no connection is available, then attach the ground wire to the box in a solid way. How a 3-Way Switch Works. When wiring a 3-way switch circuit, all we want to do is to control the black wire hot wire to turn on and off the load from 2 different locations.
The diagram here will give you a better understanding how this circuit works and how a 3-way switch is wired. The source power black wire is coming in from the left. It ties into the common on the left switch see image below. When the left switch is toggled, it connects to the upper circuit and now the circuit is open at the right switch which turns off the light. Toggle the right switch and it connects to the upper circuit and now closes the path and turns the light back on and so on.

By looking at the moving 3-way switch above, the hot black wire coming from the power source will always attach to the common screw on the 1st switch in the circuit. Then the traveler wires are connecting both switches and it does matter which wire goes to which traveler screw.
Now with that said, just look at the switch again and look at the circuit. There you have it, 3-way switch wiring simplified. It's very important that the ground or bare copper wire is connected to the green screws on the switches. How a 4-Way Switch Works. You must understand the 3-way circuit above in order to get the 4-way circuit. A 4-way switch circuit is nothing more than wiring a 4-way switch between the 2 3-way switches in a 3-way switch circuit.
Now don't let this be confused with where the switches are physically located in your home.I recently purchased a Maestro SG. This kit delivered and everything worked on first attempt. Note: If you are installing this kit on a similar guitar, you may have to sand the hole for the input jack a bit before mounting it.
Stew-Mac has it all. Plus great advise and tips. Love the catalog. Could spend a fortune! Fantastic kit. It took a bit of sanding the port for the jack, but it dropped right into my Epiphone G I liked my guitar before, but now I love it. The difference is night and day. The components were good, vastly better than the Epiphone stuff, but you can get better which is why I'm giving this 4 stars instead of 5. I'm SUPER happy with what I got and it's value, but with some really great and esoteric stuff out there that 5 stars needs to stay reserved for now.
The instructions were very good. If you haven't done this before I hadn'tI would recommend looking at a few other sets of instructions to fully understand what you're doing before you start. S-D has a fantastic diagram, and there are some great resources on the Les Paul forums.
Used this kit to restore an old SG Custom. Fairly impressed with the components, however, there is defiantly room for improvement. The switch seems a touch flimsy, however, for the cost its a worthwhile trade.
Great wiring kit for the price.That is much too difficult to accomplish. Instead, we will talk about the circuitry inside of a guitar. By making some very minor modifications particularly switchinga guitar's sound can be changed dramatically. If you read about relaysyou will learn that an electromagnet is a chunk of metal usually ironwrapped with a great deal of wire.
When an electrical current flows though the wire, a magnetic field is produced. A guitar pickup is the reverse of this whereby we start with a magnet and wrap a huge amount of wire around it thousands of turns, usually.
How to Wire a Les Paul (50s Wiring)
When guitar strings or any metal moves through the magnetic field, an electrical current is produced. In the next section, we'll discuss various switching arrangements of a guitar's pickups so that a great many tones can be produced. Again, we will not be responsible for any injuries. The typical 3 single coil guitar contains a 5 way rotary switch which allows you to get 5 sounds - each single coil; neck and middle in parallel and middle and bridge in parallel.
This modification will give you 2 more sounds - all 3 pickups in parallel and Neck and Bridge in parallel. Note that the switches are wired such that they shunt or short-circuit the coils so that they get bypassed. With this modification, you will not get any parallel sounds which are so typical of the "Fender sound". For example, "Sultans of Swing" is played with the middle and bridge pickups in parallel. The pickups in series gives you a fuller sound with much higher output, which is good for distortion.
Humbuckers Humbucking pickups are essentially 2 single coils right next to each other in one "package". If you want to know how this pickup cancels the hum, click here. Since there are 2 coils, you can have up to 4 wires with which to work, providing you with a great many tone options.
Almost all independent pickup companies manufacture humbuckers with 4 conductor cable. Stock guitar humbuckers rarely have 4 wires coming out of them but sometimes it is possible to convert 2 wire humbuckers to 4 wire types. This is an exacting procedure with little room for error but the tone rewards can be well worth the effort.

Solder your pickup leads to the pigtails after installing this assembly. Solder your pickup's hot conductor to the pigtail inner conductor and solder your pickup's ground wire to the outer shield of the pigtail. You might find it easier to use a tie wrap to hold the wires together while soldering.

On vintage 2-conductor pickups the outer shield is the ground conductor. It should be soldered to the volume pot bodies along with the outer shields of the selector switch wires. Solder the pickup ground conductors to a potentiometer body wherever you find it to be most convenient.

There is a full wiring diagram at the end of this article and we recommend you study it before starting.
We will break this guide into four parts which you can navigate to using the buttons below. Pre-tinning the components before assembly makes an easier and more solid electrical and mechanical connection. Test it out on a few scrap parts and wire before starting to get a feel for the flow of your equipment and solder. A clean and tinned tip is essential for the correct heat transfer into the joint you are creating.
We will start by wiring the initial harness that slots inside the control cavity. There isn't a lot of room in there and you'll be working with a hot soldering iron - better to work in the open where you can see what you're doing and eliminate the risk of burning the finish of your guitar. Place the template under the guitar and trace through.
Then drill the holes to M10 to accommodate the larger shaft diameter of CTS pots 9. The idea is to create the inside of a Les Paul control cavity as accurately as possible. With the template complete, assemble the 4 pots as per the below photo. You can also turn the pots inwards at a slight angle. Note - our long shaft k pots come with 2 hex nuts, a flat washer and a serrated washer.
The first nut is used for height adjustment inside the control cavity. The serrated washer sits in between this nut and the inside of the cavity ie. The dress washer and the second nut are used to tighten the pot from the other side. So that order again, nut, serrated washer, flat washer, nut. Lay down a ground wire connecting each pot together. Using the black cloth wire provided or tinned copper, lay the ground running from the top left pot neck volume clockwise until you reach the bottom left pot of the template bridge volume It does not need to be a continuous wire.
In fact it is a lot easier to cut the ground wire provided into 3 - as long as each pot is connected. By putting it on the edge, you leave more room for grounding the toggle switch and pickup leads on the volume pots which you will do later.
It is recommended that you allow for a little bit of slack in the wires in case you miscalculated the dimensions of the template compared to your control cavity. Next, ground the lugs on each pot that will not be used in the circuit.
From a birds-eye point of view, these are the first lugs on each volume pot lug 3and the middle lugs on the tone pots lug 2. You can either use a snippet of ground wire soldered between the lug and the back of the pot or alternatively, bend the lug back onto the pot and solder. If you decide to bend it back onto the pot, be careful - if you over do it on the solder, you risk getting some inside the pot via the hole behind the middle lug. Refer to the diagram further down the page for reference.
After completing the above steps you should now have the initial wiring harness which will simply drop into your control cavity. The harness is now ready to install into your Les Paul. On to the toggle switch wiring. Here is our guide to wiring it using braided guitar wire - the Gibson way. Note - your guitar may vary in length so be sure to double check your lengths before starting.
Before we start - a little lesson on braided guitar wire and how it works. It essentially two wires in one. So the key is to ensure that the braid is pulled back far enough as to not touch the hot wire. Next - make sure you know what the different lugs on the the toggle switch do.
